I’m taking a break from Vintage Friday to present this. After all, friends share failures as well as successes, right? A beautiful, lacy beret that opened up too much when I blocked it. I should have remembered to take my gauge after washing, not just from swatching. The gauge should have been 5.5 sts/inch. I got 4.5 sts/inch. This difference led the circumference to be a whopping 6 inches too big. The hat is huge. I plan to redo the pattern using a smaller needle size.
The pattern is Star of the County Down, generously offered for free( Ravelry link) by Abigail Welbourn. I used gorgeous Rowan Wool Cotton. Soft, warm, with fabulous stitch definition. I have already ripped it all out and re-wound it. I had planned to wear this beret on my train trip tomorrow as part of my perpetual search for the fantasy look of vintage train travel. I may simply be working on the beret instead!
I am lucky enough to be spending this gorgeous fall weekend in Virginia. I plan to visit the Smithsonian Art Museum, the crafts at the Renwick Gallery in particular. Tomorrow, there is also the Georgetown Food and Wine Festival and a craft show in Arlington. On Sunday, I hope to go apple picking! I am gathering all of my resources for making apple butter, which I will do on Tuesday next week. Gotta run – I have whole wheat pumpkin bread in the oven and I still need to pack!
