Much of my knitting has been focused on baby gifts recently. I finally gave this very special present this weekend so now I can post it! The blanket is sewn flannel on one side and cotton on the reverse- a simple project that is actually helping me to learn how to better control the sewing machine. The stuffed animal is an elephant, from the Last Minute Knitted Gifts book. I love this pattern! It makes an elephant, bunny, or bear and I’ve finally hit upon my favorite combination. Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted with size 4 needles. I could even do size 3, I think. Ravelry page.
There’s a little hat and set of bootees in there, but my favorite part has to be the gorgeous elephant vest. It’s my first attempt at intarsia.Ravelry page. I had a little difficulty getting the sizing to work with my gauge. The free pattern is by Rowan, and I modified the color scheme to be more bold and I also eliminated a few rows of border intarsia in favor of simply a few rows of the contrast color.
I soaked this vest and the other matching items in white vinegar before washing them to make sure my bright blue/purple didn’t bleed onto the yellow. I’m actually quite thrilled with how it came out. Notice both photos – one is before washing and blocking, the other one after. Notice how the stitches relax with washing and produce a better draping fabric.
Of course, more photos here.
