Basically, in the pre-dawn hours on Dec 13th, the youngest daughter of the house wears a crown with candles and a white outfit, and goes from room to room, waking people up with hot coffee and Lussekattor (saffron buns). Originally, the solstice was Dec 13th, so St. Lucy – the saint of light – was celebrated after the longest day of the year. Celebrating the bringing forth of light, so to speak.
I’d like to try to do something this year, probably wear the crown and a white dress, and make some hot chai and probably some cinnamon rolls. I might even buy them ahead of time from the bakery and just heat them in the oven. And our celebration won’t be at 4 a.m. – but probably at 6 or 7. Or maybe even 8 a.m. The crown pattern is from Handknit Holidays. I’m using all different kinds of scrap yarn with it, so we’ll see how it goes!
