This year, I am really into the idea of making a gingerbread house as part of my Christmas decorations. I found this group on flickr that has lots of inspirational photos. I’m trying to decide if I want to buy a pan like this one, that would simplify the process considerably. It’s against my nature to take any kind of shortcut, however, as I think about my ideas on simplifying my life, especially my craft life, it’s something to consider. Simplifying crafts means that I only spend a lot of time on stuff that really matters. I don’t know if I will like making a Gingerbread House, much less devote tons of time to it. I attempted sugar cookies once – I hated rolling out the dough and cutting it. Everything got stuck to everything else. Using an embossed pan would make all of that so much easier, and ensure that I spent my time doing the fun part of decorating and then moving on. However, I also do not want to accumulate a bunch of one-trick ponies in my kitchen. Bakeware that only serves one purpose and will be used once a year? I’m not sure that fits in with the idea of simplifying.
Does anyone out there have experience making gingerbread houses? Love ’em? Hate ’em? I have the feeling that this year maybe I will attempt one from scratch, without buying a pan, and see how it goes. If I love having the decorated house around for the holidays, then maybe I will get a pan to make it easier in the future. If it doesn’t add much to my celebration, then it’s out.
