I recently had the happy fortune of finding a 1963 copy of the Amy Vanderbilt Success Program for Women’s book on How to Be Well Dressed, by Joan O’Sullivan. It is chock-a-block with advice on girdles, gloves, shoes, caring for one’s wardrobe, selecting proper clothing for your lifestyle, and pairing colors. Some of my favorite gems are in the “Watch Those Details” section at the conclusion, which ends by reminder readers Every appearance is an important one. I’ve scanned the pages most critical (and hilarious) for stylish ladies: the sections on selecting colors, gloves, jewelry, and foundation garments. And as a bonus, since so many of my friends are expecting right now, I also threw in the section on maternity wear. 😉
